Woman dead, two critical after NSW smash

A woman is dead after a head-on collision on the NSW south coast.

The 36-year-old was a passenger in a Subaru that smashed into a Volvo on Matron Porter Drive at Milton just before 4pm Thursday.

She died at the scene, police said, while the 36-year-old male driver of the vehicle was taken to Liverpool Hospital with critical leg and head injuries.

Also in the Subaru was a five-year-old boy who was initially taken to hospital in Milton with facial injuries.

He was airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick when his condition deteriorated, a NSW Ambulance spokesman told AAP.

The driver of the Volvo, a 39-year-old male, was taken to Milton Hospital for observation and will undergo mandatory blood and urine tests.
