Despite the growing list of cancellations, Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins downplayed the delays, telling Sunrise that everything was running smoothly, while also blaming Tuesday’s peak hour chaos on “weather issues” and a “blip of genuine sickness”.
“There are no delays due to staff shortages this morning,” Mr Collins said.
“Trains are running well this morning, we had one or two cancellations first thing, but the services to all destinations are running well.”

The train network went into meltdown on Tuesday afternoon as commuters at Sydney Airport were turned away from platforms, while others were left waiting more than two hours as mass-cancellations caused a major backlog around the city.
Wynyard rail staff were also seen refusing entry at the station gates, bringing exhausted passengers to tears.
Transport NSW tweeted on Wednesday morning: "MAJOR DELAYS ACROSS THE NETWORK due to staff availability & earlier incidents. Trains running at reduced frequency. Buses supplement some services. Listen to station announcements for the latest."
Those stuck on platforms around the city wasted no time taking to social media to vent their frustrations with Sydney Trains.

Gordon station. That crowd runs all the way out of the station into the replacement bus queues. Am I the only one who thinks this level of overcrowding is dangerous? #SydneyTrains pic.twitter.com/H7eFgqO2JF
