Cyclist fatally struck by car in southern Sydney cemetery

A cyclist has been killed following a collision with a car at a cemetery in Sydney's south.

Ron Doolan was hit by a car while riding his pushbike through the Woronora Memorial Park shortly before 7am on Sunday.

Away from busy roads, the cemetery is a popular place for cyclists. With low speed limits on the park's roads, the community is baffled as to how the tragedy could have happened.

Police said they arrived at the cemetery on Linden Street, Sutherland, to find the father of two trapped under a Toyota Corolla hatchback.

The man's mobile phone rang over and over, before his family came to confirm their fears.

"The driver of the car, believed to be aged 29, has undergone mandatory testing at Sutherland Hospital and is providing police from Sutherland Local Area Command with a statement," NSW Police said.

Charges have not yet been laid, as crash investigators are still trying to work out who was at fault, and how the tragedy could occur with a 20 kilometre speed limit.

Woronora CEO Graham Boyd is struggling to comprehend how the fatal incident happened.

"It appears to be a series of unfortunate events that have just culminated in something that's terrible in a very serene place," he said.

"Makes no sense because it's so quiet, there's not many people around and speed does not appear to be a factor.

"We do have bike riders through here, we do have cars through here, pedestrian traffic, dog walkers, it's always a safe environment."

Inspector Chris Hill described the incident as "awful".

"Twenty-three years in this job it's the first time I've seen an incident like this within the grounds of a cemetery... it's horrible.”
