Sawn-off rifle, knives found in NSW car

A sawn-off rifle and a cache of knives have been seized from a car in Newcastle and a 27-year-old man is behind bars after suspicious activity tipped off police.

Officers pulled over the Ford Falcon on Hunter Street in Newcastle's west in the early hours of Wednesday with a sawn-off rifle, a hunting knife and two pocket knives allegedly found when police searched the car.

A 27-year-old man was charged with possession of the weapons and will front Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, while two other passengers, a 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, were also arrested but were released pending further inquiries.
