'Super mum' saves five kids from burning house in western Sydney

A western Sydney mum is being hailed a superhero for single-handedly saving her five children from a house fire.

Sharon McKeown was doing the laundry in her St Clair home on Friday, about 6pm when her smoke alarm went off.

"Thank God I had smoke alarms, as I turned around, it was black and the two little ones were fast asleep,” she said.

Within seconds the house was consumed by smoke and flames.

But with five children, including a four-month-old, trapped inside Ms McKeown had no time to think.

"I grabbed the two girls out of the bed because they were asleep and got them all out the front, I had to go back in a few times looking for him [her son].

"I realised there was nothing at all we could do everything was gone."

Sadly, the home was destroyed but luckily, no one was hurt.

"I call her super mum,” one of Ms McKeown’s daughter’s said.

NSW Fire and Rescue are still trying to determine what caused the blaze, but believe it could’ve been an accident.

“At this stage it's too early for investigators to establish exactly how this fire broke out but they are looking at the possibility that it was accidentally started by a young child,” NSW Fire and Rescue’s Josh Turner said.

“Accidents do happen, whether it be fire or things around pools and drownings, it's continual around the house.”

The community rallied after news of the fire got out. Strangers have delivered much-needed supplies for the mum and her kids.

A crowdfunding page has also been opened to help the McKeown family.
