'Horrible, brutal': Hunt on for man who bashed his mother so badly she needed surgery

A police search is underway for a man who brutally attacked his mother in a road rage attack, leaving her needing surgery to her face.

James Uhr, 27, rammed his mother's white hatchback off the road before it collided with a power pole in Wollongong about 8am on Wednesday.

He then jumped out of the stolen black ute he was driving before savagely bashing his mother in the face.

"The offender has approached the car, opened the door and punched his mother in the head and mouth," Deputy Inspector Brad Ainsworth said.

He then fled the scene after stealing a second vehicle.

Neighbours say the attack was relentless, with each blow so heavy that it actually shook the small car.

The assault, which happened outside a childcare centre, only came to an end when Uhr was told the police were on their way.

"It's horrible, it's brutal, it's scary when it's in your backyard really," nearby resident Chelsea Marmont said.

Uhr's mother is in a serious condition in hospital and will need surgery.

Police are urging anyone with information over Uhr's whereabouts to call 000.
