Grandma pulls toddler from car before it bursts into flames

A Sydney grandmother has dragged her toddler grandson from a wrecked car just seconds before it burst into flames.

The 62-year-old was driving with her 17-month-old grandson when she crashed into a power pole on Annangrove Road, north of Sydney, at about midday Tuesday.

She managed to free herself and the toddler just before the car erupted into a fireball.

“It was very fortunate she wasn't knocked unconscious in the collision because the outcome would've been completely different," NSW Ambulance Chief Inspector Brian Parsell said.

"We could've easily ended up with two fatalities today."

Adding to the pair’s luck was an ambulance paramedic was driving past them on his way to work.

Acting Inspector Peter Van Praage managed to be first on the scene.

“The intensity of the flames even when I arrived which was only a few moments after would've prevented, would've made it impossible for any rescuers to get them out alive,” he said.

Act Insp Van Praage said the grandmother was “quite upset, quite emotional” with the close call for her and her grandson.

Both were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

It’s understood fatigue may've been a factor in the crash. The woman had taken the boy to visit his great grandmother and was just a few minutes from home.

Live powerlines brought down in the crash are believed to have started the blaze.

Act Insp Van Praage alerted emergency crews to the danger, before the Rural Fire Service arrived to clear the cables away.
