Fire breaks out at Sydney scrap metal yard

Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that broke out at a metal recycling plant in Sydney's west.

The fire took hold in a large pile of old cars at the St Marys plant just before 1pm on Thursday, a spokesman for Fire & Rescue NSW said.

Multiple crews, including an aerial unit, converged on the scene trying to contain the flames as black smoke rose over the suburb.

The fire crews used heavy machinery to break up the pile of metal to extinguish the fire.

By dusk, crews were mopping up the final parts of the fire, but an investigation into the cause of the blaze will take some time to wrap up.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
