Sydney nurse dies of mystery illness while honeymooning in Fiji
A Sydney newlywed has died from a mystery illness while honeymooning in Fiji less than one hour before medevac crews arrived to airlift her back to Australia.
According to grieving husband Chase Clarke, 28, blood tests have ruled out Typhoid, which was originally suspected as the cause of death.
Kelly Clarke, 24, began feeling ill on Wednesday, but put her pains down to a stomach bug.
Just hours later, the Sydney nurse was being rushed to hospital in Lautoka where doctors suspected she had Typhoid.
She had been diagnosed with the auto-immune disease lupus, however it's not known if it is related to her sudden death.
As her new husband, Chase Clarke, rushed back to the resort to collect their belongings, doctors decided the best course of action was to place the Ryde local in an induced come when the initial Typhoid treatment failed.
“She said over the phone she was scared she was going to die and I just told her I loved her, what else could I say?” Mr Clarke told News Corp.
“I told her to be strong, that I was coming straight back and to rest up because she needed her strength.”
That was the last time Mr Clarke would speak to his new bride.
Less than one hour before a medevac team arrived on the South Pacific island to airlift Mrs Clarke back to Sydney, the mystery illness had claimed her young life.
Seven News Online contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs who said they were assisting Ms Clarke's family.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance, in accordance with the Consular Services Charter, to the family of an Australian woman who passed away in Fiji," a spokesperson confirmed.
