WATCH: Trapped koala's adorable canoe rescue

The rescue of a stranded koala from rising waters on the Murray River has been filmed by a group of boating researchers.

Video shot by La Trobe University in students in Victoria shows the koala stuck in a tree as a member of the team brings in a canoe to the tree surrounded by the mighty Murray.

The thankful marsupial carefully climbs on board before being ferried towards the shore on Ulupna Island.

After disembarking the canoe, the leaf-eating marsupial heads for higher and dryer ground.

It's believed the koala may have become stuck after waters began to rise in the area.

Student Kirra Coventry told the Bendigo Advertiser it was as if the koala "wanted to get closer to the canoe".

“Everyone’s pretty amazed that he was so happy and so comfortable to jump in and get so close to people – he was so relaxed,” Ms Coventry said.

She said the water was flowing too fast for the koala to climb down by itself.
