A 34-year-old man has been nabbed at an inner Sydney train station by the Sex Crimes Squad after allegedly engaging in sexual conversations with a teenage boy online, with whom he then tried to meet up.

Strikeforce Trawler officers began speaking online with a man from Sydney's inner west in June.

Police allege Kevin John Newton, 34, believed he was speaking to a 14-year-old, engaged in sexually explicit conversations with the minor, and made arrangements to meet in person.

Detectives arrested Newton at Petersham Railway Station on Thursday morning, with officers then executing a search warrant at a property nearby and seizing items for forensic examination.

Newton was charged with use carriage service to procure persons under 16.

He was refused bail and scheduled to appear at Newtown Local Court later in the day.
