Ship of fear: Passengers' pictures of smashed cabins, wild waves on horrific cruise voyage from Sydney
Passengers on board a luxury cruise have shared pictures of their frightening voyage through "100km/h winds and 12-metre waves" which they feared were going to swallow the ship off the NSW coast on the weekend.
What was meant to be a dream holiday for those on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship quickly turned into a nightmare.
The wild weather that wreaked havoc across NSW and saw a tradesman killed in Sydney's strong winds last week continued to linger off the coast where 2124 people were on board the ship
Judith Spence shared vision of large waves rag-dolling the ship but the real damage took place inside.
“We had the most horrendous night on the Carnival Spirit last night… broken glass in nearly every cabin,” she wrote.
“We had 12-metre seas, sometimes 15, and 100 kph winds … so many people sick today … thought we were going to roll over.”
Images from inside the ship revealed the extent of the damge, showing smashed plates, broken bottles and discarded food.
Despite glassware crashing around her cabin, passenger Roslyn Hay Taylor praised the staff and captain “for his expertise in controlling his vessel and making it safe for all on board.
“We also applauded the calmness and compassion afforded to all passengers by his diligent crew. I was one of the very sick and still would cruise again,” she wrote on Facebook.
No one was injured and all passengers safely returned to Sydney on Monday.
