Two drivers killed in fiery 'double truck collision'

Two truck drivers have been killed in a fiery head-on collision south of Sydney.

Police said two semi-trailers collided head-on on Picton Road, Wilton about 5am on Friday, causing one of them to roll and burst into flames.

Remarkably, a dog travelling in one of the trucks survived the fatal crash.

Firefighters were called to the scene but were unable to gain full access with one of the burning trailers obstructing the road.

One driver was caught in the inferno however the blaze was so intense that firefighters were unable to establish if there was a body inside until they extinguished the flames.

Police said the other driver was ejected from his truck and died at the scene.

“As a result of that collision there has been significant damage to both trucks,” a police officer told reporters at the scene.

“One of those trucks, the cabin has caught on fire and both drivers have died.”

Picton Road was expected to be closed in both directions for the morning with traffic diversions in place and motorists advised to avoid the area, the Transport Management Centre said.

The road is closed between Almond Street and Macarthur Drive and is likely to remain closed for some hours.
