Trump, Turnbull meeting locked in for May after rocky start to relationship

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and US President Donald Trump are reportedly set to meet in New York in May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Fairfax Media has reported that the meeting would take place on board a battleship in New York Harbour and would underline the solidarity of the ANZUS treaty.

Federal government advisors, however, are reportedly split on the timing of the trip.

The battle ran from May 4-8, and the federal budget is due to be handed down on Tuesday May 9.

The relationship between the two allies was rocked earlier this month when details of a heated call between Mr Trump and Mr Turnbull were made public.

Mr Trump's made headlines around the world when he took to Twitter to slam a deal Prime Minister Turnbull had struck with the Obama administration.

"Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!" President Donald Trump tweeted following the pair's first phone call.

After refusing to provide "public comment" on the call, the Australian leader denied the Washington Post reports the call ended abruptly.

The PM confirmed the call had lasted only 25 minutes with the majority of the conversation focusing on the refugee deal.

However, he hosed down reports that the reality TV star turned leader of the free world ended the call abruptly.

"The call ended courteously, that's all I want to say about that," Mr Turnbull has said.
