'Second-biggest present': Parents of man tortured by brothers pleased with sentences

The family of a Sydney man who was bashed, stabbed and force-fed Xanax during an ice-fuelled attack say they are happy their son’s killers will spend decades behind bars.

Dane McNeill was brutally murdered by brothers Haysem and Azam Charbaji before his body was stuffed in a suitcase, dumped at a Picnic Point park and set alight in July 2014.

In court on Tuesday, 24-year-old Haysem was sentenced to a minimum 27 years behind bars while his older brother Azam was handed a minimum 24-year jail term for the “cruel” and violent crime, which allegedly stemmed from a drug debt.

The brothers showed little remorse throughout the court process and could be heard laughing as the judge read out gruesome facts.

Outside court Mr McNeill's mother Rebecca and father Peter said two families had been destroyed by the brothers' crimes - hers and the Charbajis'.

"But I'm glad they're not going to be out to wreak havoc on anyone ever again," she said.

"This is probably the second-biggest present we could have got," an elated Peter McNeill added.

"First, we could have had our son back, but that's never possible, so to have this type of sentence against the brothers, we couldn't be happier.”

Mr McNeill was bashed, stabbed with a steak knife, tied up with duct tape and force-fed a lethal dose of Xanax tablets during an ice-fuelled weekend of violence at the Charbajis' homes at Heckenberg and Cartwright, in southwest Sydney.

The court heard Haysem’s girlfriend Lexy May Jamieson sat by and did nothing while Mr McNeill was attacked and tied up at the Heckenberg apartment she shared, and that she later used bleach to clean the unit.

Justice Rothman said Haysem Charbaji seemed to be the instigator of the violence but Azam's involvement in the torture seemed greater.

"Azam was the more violent but both occasioned harm and both administered drugs," he said.

Both had a long history of drug use, violence and anti-social behaviour and were no strangers to the courts, the hearing was told.

Sitting with the Charbaji brothers in the court dock, Jamieson buried her head in Haysem's chest and sobbed after the sentences were handed down by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Rothman on Tuesday.

Jamieson, 26, had walked into court on Tuesday on bail, but she was taken into custody after being jailed for a minimum of two years for being an accessory to the horrific crime.

The brothers will stay behind bars until at least 2043 and 2039 for the brutal killing.
