John Hopoate bailed after 'threatening worker'

Former NRL player and heavyweight boxer John Hopoate has been released on bail allegedly threatening a worker in a business in Sydney's north.

Hopoate, 42, handed himself into Manly police yesterday after the alleged incident and was charged with intimidation, stealing and breaching an apprehended violence order.

He is alleged to have made several threats before stealing a drink from the premises.

The father of ten was already on an 18-month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to assaulting a supermarket worker in Crows Nest in May this year.

He has been released on bail. He appeared to high five a supporter while leaving the court.

The then-Wests Tigers player caused international outrage after inserting his fingers into the backsides of several players during a game in 2001.

Hopoate defended his actions at the time by saying he was attempting to give the players a “wedgie” but was suspended for 12 weeks and dropped by the Tigers.
