Man injured after falling from third-storey balcony in brawl at Sydney backpackers

A man has been seriously injured after falling from a balcony during a brawl on Sydney's eastern beaches.

Police said the man fell from the third-storey balcony of a backpackers hostel in Coogee.

The brawl erupted at the hostel, which forced the man backwards before he fell and landed on a awning that broke his fall.

Police have launched a critical incident investigation as officers were at the scene in Coogee when the man fell on Saturday evening.

Police said the man, believed to be aged in his 20s, was sitting on a balcony when he fell onto an awning then onto the footpath.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to St Vincents Hospital in a serious condition.

Some witnesses said they were perturbed that diners returned to their meals on the balcony moments after the man fell to the ground.
