Altercation between man and police officer leaves footpath stained with blood

A savage fight broke out in Nowra between a police officer and a man who allegedly assaulted the officer’s car, and then the officer himself.

The policeman was patrolling the area on Thursday when he saw the man standing in the middle of the road.

A police statement said the man approached the police car and began “punching the driver’s window several times”.

When the officer attempted to get out of the car, the man is said to have “grabbed” the male officer around the neck. Several bystanders then rushed in to help.

The man was wrestled to the footpath, and slammed to the ground.

Despite a head wound, the man continued to struggle and yell.

The 40-year-old was arrested and checks are now being made as to whether drugs were involved.

The police officer was not seriously injured, although media footage shows him red-eyed afterwards, likely due to a mishap with his pepper spray during the incident.

“It was very lucky that the police officer was not seriously injured,” police said in a statement.
