Shaun Kenny-Dowall in tears as court finds him not guilty of charges

Sydney Roosters NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall burst into tears as he was cleared of domestic violence offences against his former partner.

Kenny-Dowall was found not guilty of three charges relating to assault on Monday.

He faced 11 charges involving his ex-girlfriend Jessica Peris.

Eight other charges, including stalking and intimidation and using a carriage service to menace and harass, were dismissed.

Magistrate Gregory Grogin handed down his verdict in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court following a three-day trial.

The magistrate was harsh on Miss Peris, calling her actions 'opportunistic'.

The 27-year-old Kiwi international pleaded not guilty to all charges.

While giving evidence about the assaults, which were claimed to have occurred between October 2014 and last June, Ms Peris said Kenny-Dowall had tightly grabbed her arm when she tried to leave the bedroom of their eastern Sydney home.

Police prosecutor Amin Assaad argued the rugby star was a jealous and controlling boyfriend who had anger problems.

Ms Peris was supported in court by her mother, Senator Nova Peris, who watched on as intimate details of her daughter's 14-month live-in relationship with Kenny-Dowall were laid bare.

According to Ms Peris the pair argued regularly, as was made clear from a selection of the 40,000 texts the couple exchanged, which were read in court.

The court was also told details of the young couple's "vigorous" sex life.
