Wearing hoods and armed with a torch and knuckle-dusters, the thugs hid in the darkness until the client appeared.

They beat the victim as he left a lift, leaving him bloody as they fled into the darkness.

Clients across the city felt Issa's wrath after threatening to complain about his workmanship.

Some were beaten; others had Molotov cocktails made with beer bottles and torn strips of a Bob the Builder bed sheet for wicks thrown at their homes.

One victim told the court of the terror Issa inflicted.

"To be woken up by the smell of petrol stinging your nostrils ... is terrifying to say the least," they said.

"We had our lives threatened and our life turned upside down, simply because a renovation went."

Issa is behind bars, awaiting sentencing next year.
