How Salim Mehajer hit the headlines

Salim Mehajer crashed into public view for most Australians following a spectacular August wedding which left residents in a western Sydney suburb fuming.

But it was a 7 News revelation of a police investigation into alleged kidnapping threats that has kept the 29-year-old property developer in the spotlight.

The lavish celebration, which led to the closure of a Lidcombe street and traffic jams in surrounding suburbs stirred up a media maelstrom which seems unlikely to abate any time soon.

Australian soon learned that Mr Mehajer was also the deputy mayor of Sydney’s Auburn council, and suddenly civic affairs there became national news.

His business, including multi-million lawsuits, have since come into the spotlight.

There have been repeated demands for his resignation by some councillors ever since.

As the memories of the ostentatious nuptials, and the series of videos that accompanied it, faded it seemed like the focus on the suddenly-high-profile property developer would follow suit.

Until 7 News broke the news in September that police were probing claims Mr Mehajer had made threats to kidnap Bruce Herat’s children after a dispute over gym equipment.

In an unexpected twist, it was revealed that one of those children’s was Lindt Café siege survivor Joel Herat.

Earlier this month police charged Mr Mehajer, 29, over the threats to kidnap. He has since faced court to deal with the resulting apprehended violence order (AVO).
