Couple behind controversial wedding say they're happier than ever

The couple that became the talk of Australia with their incredibly lavish wedding has made their first public appearance together.

Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer and his new wife Aysha Mehajer faced intense community backlash for their extravagant wedding, which caused chaos on Sydney’s roads.

The couple who attended a Bridal Expo in Bankstown last night, told 7 News they haven’t really had a chance to experience married life.

When asked if he had got a chance to experience married life, Mr Mehajer replied: “Well with all this nonsense that's going on probably not, but Aysha and I have held on very tight and strong.”

“It feels like we've been married for a lifetime, there's nothing in our way obstructing us."

Mrs Mehajer told 7 News she was pleased to be able to support the event and those suppliers who helped make her big day so special.

The wedding sparked controversy after it caused traffic delays.

"I'm happy to be here tonight to support to some of the suppliers that helped us on our special day and we're here to support them and show them our love back.”

The couple have been consistently in the headlines since their wedding day, after news emerged that they had unlawfully closed a Lidcombe street.

While Mr Mehajer survived a vote by Auburn City Council to have his actions investigated, his business dealings and legal history have both coming under intense scrutiny. He was also fined $220 for the street closure.

Apart from blocking a Lidcombe street Mr Mehajer also hired out four helicopters, while his fiancee Aysha travelled with a motorcade of motorbikes and luxury cars worth $50 million for the weekend wedding extravaganza.

However despite the overwhelming media coverage, the Mehajers say they are happier than ever.
