A Sydney dog owner has used the power of social media to track down his stolen pooch.

He posted security pictures of a woman brazenly taking his Labrador from outside a pub in Bondi Junction, and within four hours he got his best friend back.

Out of all of Simba's adventures by his best mate's side, Tuesday was the most hair-raising of them all.

Rupert Kaldor took his his beloved pet to a business meeting in Bondi Junction.

He tied Simba up outside the Eastern Hotel where security cameras captured what appeared to be a friendly, innocent pat from a stranger.

But 40 seconds later a mystery woman untied his lead and walked away with Simba.

"It [was] pretty gutwrenching, if he just went missing it's another thing but for someone to actually come and take your dog is pretty horrible," Kaldor told 7News.

"He's like my son. [I'm] just stoked that everyone helped out so much."

Rupert posted the security images on social media and the woman who was seen walking, then running off with Simba, was identified.

He was found inside her unit in a block of Bondi flats.

"He barked and the neighbour kept on banging on the door, finally she opened and he just came bolting out and it was great."

Police spoke to the woman who is known to them.

The security vision will be used as evidence against the Bondi woman who is expected to be charged with stealing a dog, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail.
