Dangerous sinkholes filled in

The sinkholes that led to the evacuation of two unit blocks in western Sydney have finally been filled in.

It took nine hours, 30 truckloads and 345 tonnes of concrete to plug the two dangerous holes at Harris Park.

The sinkholes, which spread from an empty building site saturated by heavy rain on Saturday, displaced about 50 residents.

While permission to build at the site was granted 10 years ago, the site has remained as a giant dangerous hole for the past five years.

With the construction site owner long gone, owners of the neighbouring properties were forced to pay for emergency repairs.

The owners still do not know if their buildings are safe and it remains unclear when residents, who have been staying in temporary accommodation, will be able to return

Parramatta Council want to have greater powers to make sure this does not happen again.

"We have limited control but those controls are in place for when buildings are almost finished,” Lord Mayor Scott Lloyd said.

However the Planning Minister's office told 7News the Council has always had the power to take action and order a time limit on construction.

How long the empty building site will remain a giant hole is now anyone’s guess.
