Irish tourist Barry Lyttle has been given a 13 month suspended sentence for punching his brother Patrick in Kings Cross.

Last Thursday Mr Lyttle pleaded guilty to recklessly causing grievous bodily harm to his younger brother after hitting him outside a Potts Point pub in the early hours of January 3.

CCTV vision captured on the night shows Patrick shoving his brother Barry, who strikes him on the head, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the pavement.

Patrick suffered a serious head injury and was placed on life support at St Vincent's Hospital. He spent a week in a coma before making an improvement in mid-January.

Patrick earlier called for the charges against his brother to be dropped but prosecutor Alex Poulos said a full-time custodial sentence should be imposed.

In sentencing Mr Lyttle Magistrate Graeme Curran said he was "obviously sincere" in his remorse but stressed he needed to consider deterrence.

"The community is rightly concerned about male violence," Magistrate Curran said.

Patrick had his arm around Barry, who was crying as the sentence was handed down in the Downing Centre Local Court.

"When my family is healed I will be healed," Patrick told the court during a victim impact statement.

He also told the court that, if his brother was allowed to go home, the pair intended to travel around Ireland together. They plan to speak to young people about the devastating consequences of violence.
