A woman has tracked down her stolen iPhone after the new owner accidentally posted a selfie to her Facebook.

Nicola Shelton, from Melbourne, was on holiday in Byron Bay when her bag was stolen at the beach.

The 33-year-old thought she would never see her possessions again.

But several days later, Nicola’s boyfriend saw a photo of a bearded man uploaded to her Facebook.

“So this is the low life that stole my bag/iPhone and has decided to take a photo with my phone and post it on my Facebook!!” Nicola wrote in a status.

“Scum! Bag stolen in Byron bay on February 14, please share to everyone!!!” she continued.

The photo was subsequently shared 19, 000 times and was eventually seen by the man himself.

He messaged Nicola and told her he had unknowingly bought the device from a stranger.

He handed it in at the Byron Bay police station and Nicola was reunited with her phone.

“I’m just amazed by the help from people I don’t even know," she told Daily Mail Australia.

“I’m happy to get my phone back.”
