Men 'shot in head while they slept'

Two men are in hospital after they were shot in the head as they slept next to their girlfriends, with a two-year-old girl sleeping nearby.

A 31-year-old man, who has been charged with attempted murder, allegedly broke into the Newcastle house and fired a rifle at two men.

Luke Convery, 21, and James Myers, 30, both suffered gunshot wounds to the head.

Police allege the shooter first fired a number of times at 30-year-old Myers in a bedroom of the Jesmond home, where he was sleeping next to his girlfriend.

Convery was then allegedly shot once in the head as he slept on the couch with his 21-year-old girlfriend, Myers' girlfriend's younger sister.

He has a .22 calibre bullet lodged behind one of his eyes, the Newcastle Herald reports.

According to his grandmother, Convery and his girlfriend had "popped in to say 'Hi'" after spending the day visiting the historic Maitland Gaol, and ended up staying over for the night.

"He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," she told the Herald.

The suspected shooter is believed to be the ex-partner of Myers' girlfriend and was allegedly caught by police in a nearby suburb in possession of a .22 calibre pump action rifle and a folding knife.

Both men suffered gunshot wounds to the head, and Convery, 21, remains on life support.

The two sisters and two-year-old girl manage to escape uninjured.

"My information is they are very upset by what has gone on and that is very understandable with the gravity of the situation," Inspector Bruce McGregor said.

A 31-year-old man will appear in court on Monday after he was refused bail.
