Shark alert at Manly Beach

The shark alarm has sounded at Manly in Sydney's northern beaches district.

Witnesses at Queenscliff said the siren went off at about 1.15pm this afternoon.

There were close to 50 people in the water at the time.

Lifeguards called for the swimmers and surfers to come back to shore due to a shark alert.

It appears most of the Easter Sunday beachgoers have returned to the water.
