Olivia Newton John walks for wellness

FIRST ON 7: Perennial songstress Olivia Newton-John is no stranger to pulling a crowd.

And today she joined the throng, leading a charity walk raising thousands for the cancer centre that bears her name.

The superstar was just one of the crowd, raising one-hundred-thousand dollars to fight a disease which doesn't discriminate.

“It's a dream come true, really,” sahe said. “It's been an amazing journey.”

As well as treating cancer, the facility focuses on wellness activities like yoga, acupuncture and meditation.

To be able to have it in the hospital where you’ll be able to go and get some solace and some support in body, mind and spirit will be an amazing thing.”

Patients like Lucas Adda are grateful.

“Opportunity to come in and use the centre, it's been an absolutely tremendous help”, he said.

The final stage of the Olivia Newton John centre will be officially opened on Friday but fundraising events like this will still be necessary, because the wellness programs don't attract government funding.

The community will need to raise two million dollars a year unless the government steps in.

According to the superstar, “I think as they see that people recover better and stay healthier longer and hopefully incorporate these wellness ideas into their lives, hopefully that will happen.”
