Charity volunteers making a difference

David Drew spends Monday to Friday working in IT, but come Sunday morning, he can always be found volunteering at the RSPCA in Yagoona.

Volunteers like David however, are few and far between.

A recent study shows only four out of ten Australians volunteered in a three month period, which led to the establishment of the Do Something Near You website.

The charity group DoSomething! is calling on Australians to start the New Year by putting others first. The organisation is asking Australians to make it their new year’s resolution to volunteer more in the coming year.

“At this time of year, we often talk about doing something for others, but once the New Year gets underway, many of us go back into our old habits and don’t do anything to help out in our local community,” said DoSomething! founder Jon Dee.

To make it easier for Australians to volunteer, DoSomething! have established a volunteering website that is localised to every single community in Australia.

“By typing in their postcode at DoSomethingNearYou.com.au, Australians can find a wide range of community activities that they can get involved with,” said Jon Dee.
