Man loses finger in hovercraft accident

A Sydney man has lost part of his finger, and suffered serious injuries while working on a hovercraft in the city’s south west.

The 60-year-old man was repairing the hovercraft engine on a bench at Wedderburn Air Field this morning when the accident happened.

“The propeller started spinning, striking his head and hands,” NSW Ambulance Acting Insp Aaron Casey said.

“He had injuries to his forehead and lacerations to both hands. He also had a partially amputated index. The force of the impact has been such that it removed four of the seven propeller blades.”

Paramedics say the man walked from the workbench to a couch to lay down, where crews found him.

The man was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
