Surprising twist after woman finds more than $10,000

There’s been a surprising twist for a woman in Sydney’s west who stumbled across thousands of dollars.

The woman found “a substantial amount of money” on Redbank Road at Westmead and handed it in to Parramatta Police Station on Friday about 6.30am (local time).

While police won’t say exactly how much was found, they did say it was more than $10,000.

“Police were able to identify the owner. And to great delight and happiness the owner was attending to collect,” NSW Police said.

The woman and the owner of the money, also female, have since been in contact.

But the good Samaritan who found the money “declined the offer of a reward or gift”.

“When police spoke with the finder she said, ‘It was not a big thing and it's the right thing to do’,” police said.

“We hope others who find property are just as honest and bring the property to police.”

Police added if someone found lost property they must hand it in to their nearest station.

If the property remains unclaimed after 28 days, they are entitled to keep it.
