Emergency services, including SES boats and a rescue helicopter, were called to Richmond River at Woodburn, south of Ballina, on Tuesday night after reports the man had fallen into the river and not emerged.

Police believe the missing man may have been sleeping rough on the riverbank with another man, aged 43, who was arrested at the scene.

The other man was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and is due to face Lismore Local Court on Wednesday.

Police divers are set to join Wednesday's search party.
