Police have shot a man on Sydney's northern beaches after an officer was allegedly stabbed in the hand and hit in the head with a fire extinguisher.

The man, who was allegedly armed with a knife, approached officers after they were called to a home at Narraweena around 5.20pm on Friday.

Police will allege he threw a fire extinguisher at an officer, hitting him in the head. They also say the officer was stabbed in the hand.

A second officer shot the man in the leg.

The wounded man is in hospital in a stable condition, NSW Police said.

The officer is also being treated in hospital.

Neither injury is life-threatening.

An independent police team will investigate the incident.
