A senior constable has allegedly been bitten and assaulted by two men who had been kicked out of a Newcastle pub for fighting with other patrons.

The police officer was bitten on the thigh and suffered an injury to his thumb and elbow in the altercation which took place on Sunday night as police arrested the two men, aged 23 and 52, outside the Merewether hotel, police say.

Both men were charged and the younger man, who faces six charges, was remanded in custody until a court appearance on Monday.
