NSW Police work to ID 'mummified' body

NSW Police hope post-mortem results will provide some clues into the cause of death after a mummified body was found in an empty house on Sydney's lower north shore.

Cleaners sent to clear out the Greenwich property on Greendale Street made the gruesome discovery earlier this week.

The occupant of the home died close to a year ago, and homicide detectives are working to identify the mummified body.

It's hoped the post-mortem examination will also reveal the gender and the cause of death, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.

The death is being treated as suspicious, NSW Police said in a statement on Thursday.

The occupant, named by the ABC as Bruce Roberts, is understood to have been a hoarder and the Homicide Squad has urged anyone with information to contact authorities.

Long-time neighbour Gayle Meagher recalled exchanging pleasantries with the man.

"He was a bit of a recluse," she told the ABC on Thursday.
