A Newcastle man has been shot dead in what NSW police believe was a targeted attack.
Newcastle Police Superintendent Tracy Chapman spoke to neighbours of the man on Wednesday and believes the attack was not random.
"Neighbours told me he had lived in the area for only a few months and was known for fixing his cars in the public car park," she told reporters on Wednesday
Officers were called to a unit in Hamilton South at 11pm on Tuesday and found a 57-year-old man with a gunshot wound at the front door of a second floor unit.
He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Police have set up Strike Force Alcheringa to investigate.
