NSW man charged over drugs hidden in lamps

A Sydney man will remain behind bars after more than $600,000 worth of drugs were allegedly found hidden in a shipment containing garden lamps.

The Australian Border Force allegedly discovered 5.5 kilograms of MDMA and 500 grams of the drug ice hidden inside the air cargo from Germany.

The drugs have a potential street value of more than $600,000, NSW Police said in a statement on Thursday.

Omar Mashrap, 32, and a 22-year-old man were arrested outside an apartment on Sussex Street in the CBD on Wednesday evening.

Officers allegedly seized air cargo packaging, mobile phones and documentation after searching the unit.

Mashrap was charged with possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawful import and attempting to possess a marketable quantity of an unlawful import.

His matter was briefly mentioned at Central Local Court on Thursday where Mashrap did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

He is due back at the same court on October 9.

The 22-year-old was released pending further inquiries.
