A 34-year-old man is behind bars in the NSW Hunter Region after a police investigation into allegations he tried to sexually assault an eight-year-old girl allegedly uncovered child abuse material.
Police began their investigation in June after reports a man had attempted to sexually assault the schoolgirl, who was known to him.
The man was arrested at a Cessnock home on Saturday and police seized several electronic storage devices from two houses.
Police will allege the man tried to sexually assault the eight-year-old girl on several occasions between December 2018 and June 2019.
They will also allege he produced, sent and received child abuse material online.
The man was charged with five counts of attempting sexual intercourse with a child under 10, grooming a child under 16 for sexual activity, three counts of possessing child abuse material and two counts of using a carriage to access child abuse material.
He was refused bail and is due to appear in Cessnock Local Court on Monday.
