A Sydney man will appear in court charged with grooming a 14-year-old boy online.

In September, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad's Child Exploitation Internet Unit began engaging online with a 59-year-old man from Sydney's southwest.

Police say the man believed he was speaking with a 14-year-old boy and engaged in sexually explicit conversations about acts he wished to perform on the child and sent sexually explicit material.

Detectives arrested the 59-year-old man at a home at Yagoona on Tuesday.

The man was charged with using a carriage service to procure a child under 16 for sexual activity and two counts of using a carriage service to transmit/publish/promote child abuse.

He was refused bail to appear in Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.
