A man has been severely injured after he was slashed by a propeller when his kayak was hit by a boat in the NSW Hunter Region.

The accident happened near Tomaree Headland near Port Stephens on Sunday morning, according to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter media team.

The man, 46, was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition after being treated by paramedics at the scene with severe forearm and hand injuries.

The 26-year-old driver of the boat was taken to Nelson Bay Community Hospital for mandatory testing, while his boat was towed away for examination.

Initial reports suggested the man had been in a canoe at the time of the incident but police later clarified it was a kayak.
