NSW election: Sydney restaurant sells $16 'democracy sausage'

Fish Butchery advertised it would be offering the sausage sandwiches at two locations.

A Sydney restaurant has raised some eyebrows after offering voters a $16 ‘democracy sausage’ sandwich as they head to the polls on Saturday.

With just hours until the results of the NSW state election are revealed, social media has been flooded with proud Aussies enjoying a ‘sanga’ after casting their ballot. However, one post in particular has caught the attention of voters, sparking some criticism.

Fish Butchery, run by chef Josh Niland, advertised on Friday that it would be offering ‘democracy sausage’ sandwiches at his Paddington and Waterloo locations for a whopping $16 — much higher than the average $4-$6.

“Wake up to our democracy Fish Butchery sausage sandwich after you cast your votes in the morning,” the restaurant’s Instagram caption reads. An accompanying photo shows a sausage placed on a slice of white bread with the crust cut off, topped with grilled onions and sauce.

The sausage sandwich is also listed on the restaurant’s everyday pick-up menu for the same price.

While some followers said they were excited to try one, others commented that the price was “a bit steep”. “Over priced democracy sausage, hard no,” one man wrote.

“Spectacularly missing the point of the democracy sausage,” another argued. “The point of a democracy sausage is that its cheap and simple, this is the opposite of that.” The comment prompted a response from another user, who pointed out that customers are unaware of “the cost of the ingredients and time it takes to make the sausage”.

Premier Dominic Perrottet is seeking a fourth consecutive four-year term for his Liberal-National coalition, while Labor leader Chris Minns is hoping to return his party to government after 12 years on the opposition benches.

Labor is the strong favourite to win the election, leading the polls and overwhelmingly ahead in betting agency odds. If Labor wins from opposition, it will be only the second time the party has managed the feat since 1976.
