NSW drop tops Qld-dominated best beer list

Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale has won the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers for 2019

Australians have cast their vote on the nation's favourite bevvie, crowning a NSW brew to reign supreme in a Queensland-dominated competition.

Beer lovers picked Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale as their favourite drop among more than 2500 beers nominated in the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers for 2019.

The golden fruity ale has been a regular favourite, previously winning the competition in 2011, 2015 and 2016.

Last year winner, Balter's XPA moved to second place, while ACT-based Crankshaft India Pale Ale by Bentspoke rounded out the top three.

"In its very early days, there might have been only 50 craft breweries in all of Australia. Today, voters could choose from beers made by nearly 300 breweries," GABS Festival Event Director Craig Williams said.

"It's quite remarkable how far craft beer has come in such a short time."

The GABS 2019 competition recorded 35,500 people placing more than 177,500 votes to compose a top 100 beer list with representation from 45 breweries.

Balter took the gold home when it comes to the brewers' competition, featuring eight different beers in the list.

Another 11 breweries helped Queensland beat Victoria and NSW to become the State of Origin brewer, listing 29 frosties as Australia's go-to beers.

New South Wales came a close second at 25, while Victoria seems to have lost its charm - featuring only 19 beers.

The 12 spots secured by the ACT were shared between two breweries, BentSpoke and Capital.
