NSW butcher kicks off State of Origin with a blue twist

Blue sausages have been turning heads around Sydney.

A chain of Sydney butcheries is going all out for the opening match of this year's State of Origin rugby league series, turning a popular item blue in support of NSW.

Available at locations around greater Sydney, there's arguably never been a feed that shows state pride more than Pryde Meats' "Go the Blues" sausages.

A Sydney local spotted the NSW-themed snags while shopping today and shared a photo on Reddit. "Bluey? Is that you?" he jokingly asked in reference to the beloved cartoon character.

Although some were put off by the colour of the "Smurf-meat" sausages, most Sydneysiders were getting into the spirit of things. "My kids would love these!" one mum said.

Speaking with Yahoo News, Sean Bailey from Pryde Meats confirmed the stately sausages are available at all four of Pryde's locations in Narellan, Miranda, Campbelltown and Top Ryde.

Blue secret revealed

Asked how the sausages were made, Mr Bailey said the secret is a little food colouring. "It's a chicken sausage," he said. "It's really nice. It's just chicken and chives plus a little blue food colouring in there."

The sausages have been around for a while too, with Mr Bailey saying Pryde Meats had been offering them for around a decade. "We've been doing them for a while, about 10 years or so," he said. "We did up blue and gold ones for the grand final last year for Parramatta. That blew up."

Asked if he had anything further he'd like to add before NSW faces Queensland in the series opener, Mr Bailey kept it simple: "Up the Blues!"

The 2023 State of Origin series kicks off tonight on neutral ground at Adelaide Oval at 8:05pm.
