The NSW schools closed Wednesday as 'enormous' fire threat remains
As NSW remains in a state of emergency following “horrendous” conditions on Tuesday, over 100 schools remain closed as firefighters once again face a volatile situation taking on raging bushfires dotted across the state.
Tuesday’s fires at one point led to a near-record 15 emergency warnings, with over one million hectares of land burnt and a further 12 homes lost.
Exhausted crews faced 300 new blazes on Tuesday alone with many still burning and being escalated by a change in winds thanks to a southerly buster.
As of 5.30am Wednesday, 73 fires are burning across the state, with 37 yet to be contained.
Strong winds have pushed the fire at Hillville, in northern NSW near Taree, in a north-westerly direction, along with blazes in other regions, as fires destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of bush.

The predicted conditions forced the closure of 600 schools on Tuesday, and while some have reopened, about 140 remain closed on Wednesday as the Department of Education takes no risk with vast areas of bone-dry bushland either burning or extremely vulnerable.
Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the challenged ahead was “enormous”.
