A driver has died following a serious crash on the North Circular, closing the route for hours.

Police were called at around 4.50am on Wednesday to reports of a collision involving two vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the A406 in Chingford.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended but despite the efforts of emergency services a man, who was the driver of one of the vehicles, died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

The Met Police said there were no reports of any other serious injuries and road closures remain in place.

There has been no arrest and police enquiries into the circumstances continue.

The North Circular was forced to close for several hours and one lane still remained shortly after 3pm.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 4.50am this morning (Wednesday 2 October) to reports of a road traffic collision in Southend Road, Chingford.

“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and London’s Air Ambulance.

“Our crews treated a man at the scene. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene.”

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade added: “Firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Southend Road in Chingford.

“Two vans collided with a lorry.

“Control Officers received the call at 0508 and mobilised firefighters from Chingford Fire Station to the scene. The incident was over for crews at 0534.”

It comes after a woman in her 60s was killed after being struck by a motorbike in south-east London.

The crash happened in Kidbrooke Park Road, Kidbrooke, at the junction with Pegler Square, around 8.30am on Monday.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene and the pedestrian was treated by paramedics, but despite their efforts to save her she died at the scene.

The motorcyclist - a 29-year-old man - stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
