Nominations open for byelection in Haines Junction, Yukon, after mayor's resignation
Nominations for an upcoming mayoral byelection in Haines Junction, Yukon, opened on Thursday.
It follows the abrupt resignation last month of Micheal Riseborough, who had been elected mayor just weeks earlier.
Reading from a statement at the hamlet council's Nov. 27 meeting, Riseborough cited his health as the reason for his resignation, brought on by workplace stress.
Coun. Diane Strand has been filling in as acting mayor since then.
Nominations for the byelection close on Jan. 11, with the vote taking place on Jan. 30.
The hamlet says no date has yet been set for an all-candidates forum.
Potential candidates can go to the Haines Junction village office or website for information or nomination forms. Eligible candidates must be qualified voters, meaning they are Canadian citizens and at least 18 years old on election day. They must also have lived in the municipality for at least one year before election day.
Besides Riseborough, two other candidates ran for mayor in the October hamlet election.
