Two people are dead after being stabbed in North York Sunday, police say.

Toronto police were called to the area of Don Mills Road and Cliffwood Road just before 3 p.m. for a report of a stabbing.

Officers arrived and found a man and a woman, both in their 80s, suffering from stab wounds, Insp. Jeff Bassingthwaite told reporters at the scene. Both victims were transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, but neither survived.

Police didn't explain the relationship between the two people, but Bassingthwaite said they knew each other.

He also didn't share any information about how they were stabbed, but said there are no outstanding suspects and police are not concerned for the safety of anyone in the neighbourhood.

The homicide unit is investigating.
