Nigel Havers has revealed people stop him in the street and ask him to pay back Coronation Street’s Gail Platt after his character stole her money.

The actor starred as Lewis Archer in the ITV soap, playing the role on and off from 2009 to 2019. In one storyline that had viewers gripped, conman Lewis swindled Gail (Helen Worth) out of £48,000.

And the star revealed that Corrie fans still take him to task about it.

Havers’ soap alter ego was a crook who had a relationship with Gail’s mum Audrey (Sue Nicholls). When the relationship soured he blamed Gail for it, and then got revenge on her by conning her out of her money.

Gail actor Worth came up when Havers was a guest on The One Show, with presenter Alex Jones asking his response to news that Worth is leaving Corrie after 50 years.

He agreed she would be missed and announced: "I still owe her 48 grand!"

He said: "People still come up to me and say, 'Did you ever pay her back? You still owe her 48 grand!' And I say, 'No it's just me!'"

He added: "She will be missed because she is really part of the show and she was great, great fun to work with."

Worth has been on the cobbles for five decades but this summer it was announced that she was set to bid farewell to Weatherfield this year, in what is expected to be a big storyline for the Platts.

The actor said in a statement this summer: "I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.

“The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”

The One Show airs on BBC One on weekdays at 7pm.
