Nick Grimshaw's mum once framed an old BBC Radio 1 rejection letter as his Christmas present.

The broadcaster was appearing on Mary Berry's BBC special Mary Makes Christmas on Wednesday, 18 December when this funny anecdote cropped up in conversation.

Whilst making flapjacks together, Berry asked Grimshaw if he's organised when it comes to Christmas gifts, leading the 40-year-old to recall one particularly weird idea from his mum.

"My mum, every year, is like 'What d'ya want?'" began his response. "I'm like, 'That's not the spirit of Christmas mother, you need to think of one and give it to me...'

"I always wanted to work at Radio 1 and when I was younger I applied to work there, and I got a rejection letter. And one year my mum found the rejection letter and framed it for me and gave it to me on Christmas Day, I was like 'Thank you?'" laughed Grimshaw.

Rather sweetly, Berry immediately highlighted how her guest has welcomed "lots and lots of radio work ever since".

Grimshaw landed that dream Radio 1 job in 2007, moving his way up from the now-defunct BBC Switch strand to the Weekend Breakfast Show and eventually replacing Chris Moyles on its primetime weekday version before quitting in the summer of 2021.

She informed Berry that her husband Marius Iepure is so uninterested in learning the skills of the kitchen that he's only able to whip up "rice with ketchup" if she asks him to cook.

"We have so many cookbooks, none are used," she sighed.
